I’ve heard about the International Arts & Homelessness Festival. Is this the same thing as the Summit?

Yes and no. The Festival is a week-long umbrella event running 12 to 18th November across Greater Manchester. There are many events, all of them open to the public and free. It’s a brilliant showcase of existing work by amazing organisations working in Greater Manchester and beyond.

The Summit is part of the Festival as a standalone event: It is a conference with discussions and workshops focusing on practice and policy. People buy a ticket to attend and are provided with breakfast and lunch so they can spend time meeting and learning from each other. 50% of tickets to the summit will be given free to people that are or have been homeless. All Summit delegates will be asked which evening Festival events they would like to attend.  

Where is the Summit taking place?

The main hub is The Whitworth with plenary sessions in the morning in the Grand Hall and workshops around the gallery in the afternoon. Delegates will be invited to attend evening events during the Festival for free.

What is the difference between the morning plenary sessions and the afternoon workshops?

In the morning we are all together in the Grand Hall and attend panel discussions and presentations. In the afternoon, the workshops are smaller and more intimate so people can discuss things better or have taster sessions on a specific topic or art-form for example. In the afternoon there are several workshops happening at the same time so delegates will have to choose where they want to go!

How would I know where to go for the afternoon sessions?

We will publish a full schedule closer to the date and we will get in touch with each delegate so they can book the sessions they want to attend.

Do you provide food?

We will serve a light breakfast on Thursday, Friday and Sunday morning. Lunch on these days is also provided. We’ll also have tea breaks throughout the day. All tickets are inclusive of this.

What about Saturday?

Saturday is a bit different as it is an Open Day. There will be a range of homelessness and arts/cultural organisations you can visit, all across Greater Manchester. You will be able to join in taster sessions and come see how people work and what they do in their own environment. Full schedule will be published closer to the date and delegates with Whole Conference Passes will have a suggested itinerary. Details of the Open Day will also be included in the Festival’s brochure. 

I have dietary requirements, how can I let you know?

Once you book your ticket, and closer to the time, we will be in touch so you can let us know about this and to book your individual workshops.

I can only come for a day but I am not sure which one to book.

Here is a bit more info about each day’s focus:

Day 1 on Thursday 15th is Practice – a day in which local, national and international organisations/practitioners are invited to share the way they do things. This is the ideal day for people wanting to understand more about the different ways in which art and artistic programmes work and what role can the arts play when tackling homelessness.

Day 2 on Friday 16th is Policy – a day in which we will focus on how the arts can influence policy making and on how culture can be part of those policies. There will be local and international examples of how this works. We are also hoping to have policy makers and representatives in on that day.

Day 3 on Saturday 17th is Partnerships – a day focusing on exploring the amazing work of arts & homelessness organisations and projects around Greater Manchester. We will also feature some national and international work this day. This is a free day and anyone can come to check out what is happening across Greater Manchester. This is perfect if you prefer not to commit a full day and want to be freer with your time. The full schedule of this day will be published on our website soon. The day is free of charge to attend.

Day 4 on Sunday 18th – this is the closing day and it will be dedicated to feeding back and reflecting. It’s perfect if you want to have a sense of other delegates’ views, to have a global view of the event through other people’s experiences. It’s a slightly shorter day and it will include the closing Festival performance of Man of Bench Fairy Tale – a new opera by Unlimited supported Emerging Artist David Tovey of the One Festival and Museum of Homelessness. What can I come to for free?

All Festival events are free including all evening events – check out the Festival programme for full details. The only charge is for the Summit passes/tickets at The Whitworth - check out the Summit Programme and buy tickets.

When do the sessions start? And what is the general running order of each day?

Each day (except Saturday) we will serve breakfast in The Whitworth Grand Hall at 9am and the plenary sessions will kick off at 9.45am. Lunch will be scheduled at 12 or 1pm. The afternoon programme at The Whitworth will run from after lunch until 6.30pm.

Each evening we will also propose to delegates to attend free event(s) from the Arts and Homelessness Festival (usually at around 7.30pm and in different locations).

I would like to come but I am not available the whole day/throughout the four days.

The Summit is programmed in chunks of 1h or 1h30 so you can pop out in between if you have other commitments.

You say this is an Arts and Homelessness Summit but how exactly do you work with people who are or have been homeless?

This is a co-produced event - people who are or have been homeless are involved in the design and delivery of the whole project. With One Voice has also committed to allocate 50% of Summit tickets to people who are or have been homeless. To do this, we have a free ticket type on booking so people can choose it directly, no questions asked. We also work with Greater Manchester homelessness organisations who can invite people they work with.

I’ve booked my ticket. What happens next?

Once you book your ticket(s), the With One Voice team will be in touch with more details about the Summit programme and for you to book your preferred afternoon sessions, as well as to let us know if you have any dietary requirements or any other access needs.

Please note only on-street parking is available (maximum stay, 2 hours). For Long Stay Parking you may want to consider parking in Piccadilly Station or Manchester Airport.

 

Travelling to Manchester:

If travelling by train, the station closest to the event is Manchester Piccadilly Station.

If flying in, arrive at Manchester Airport and visit https://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/getting-to-and-from/ for train, car and coach directions to and from the City Centre.

 

Staying in Manchester:

The closest hotel to The Whitworth is the Travelodge on 227 Upper Brook St, Manchester M13 0HB.
