The Citizens Theatre based in the Gorbals, Glasgow has a long standing pedigree and reputation of working with Homeless communities. The experienced team of artists lead a long term creative residency at the Chara Centre, a residential respite centre for Women. We believe that quality theatre is for everyone. Also we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to take part in the creative life of the Theatre, whether by watching a play or by direct participation. Through this involvement people can nurture the development of skills and self-confidence in an inclusive environment. We are committed to using drama as a vehicle for positive social change, particularly to benefit people who are socially or economically disadvantaged.
For many years we have worked with women's groups in the homeless community and have continued to be encouraged by the possibilities that the Theatre process can bring to an environment. We generate a safe space within which people can air opinions, so lifting the lid on important topics that affect them and therefore reinforcing a shared female commonality. By sharing our stories and life experiences through the power of Drama, our work encourages group members to reconnect with play as an adult. We have created numerous Theatre performances, recorded albums and exhibited many high quality exhibitions, showcasing women experiencing homelessness creative talents.
