Hobson Street Theatre Company

Established in 2010 as a weekly drama group associated with the Auckland City Mission, the HSTC has now become a fully fledged theatre company performing regularly in venues across New Zealand. The company prides itself on an open door policy and has brand new members as well as participants that have been there from the beginning. 2018 saw their first tour to Wellington for the renowned Fringe Festival where they performed to rave reviews and proudly took home the "Best Directed Chaos" award.

The shows are original, self devised pieces that offer the unique voice of a sometimes marginalised section of society and allow an important discussion around homelessness in Aotearoa (NZ) to be had.

Through the weekly classes, participants have found a space to share, create, perform and make lasting friendships in, whilst being supported by a consistent team of committed facilitators/directors and producers. A number of group members have been able to secure paid work as extras or occasionally with speaking roles in television and short films.

Being a part of The Hobson Street Theatre Company has been empowering to so many of our members, they continue to come back week after week because they tell us they experience a real sense of belonging. They are determined to show that "homeless don't mean hopeless."

"Often funny, but also heartfelt and poignant, the unpretentiousness and rawness of the presentation is refreshingly wonderful to see and should not be missed." - 2018 review
